The Spirit of the Season, the Spirit of Saklan

Our middle school students are partaking of the holiday season with a special celebration today, but the kids themselves chose not to simply share festivities here in their classroom but to take their joy to their Oakland Rise Elementary Second Grade reading buddies.  There they gave gift books to their reading buddies.  Immediately then, upon returning to school at noon, they began loading vans with canned foods and other materials, in order to personally deliver them to the Food Bank and STAND against domestic violence. Many of these cans they collected by caroling in my home neighborhood. Our students, grades 1-8, last week prepared special decorations to accompany meal trays at Children’s Hospital Oakland, and there are many more such examples I could provide.  This is the spirit of our school: even as our students are entirely dedicated to their learning, they still take the time and give very genuinely of themselves to help others.

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It snow!!!

Great News! Plans are in the works for a fun-filled, fantastic family Saklan Valley School Ski Trip. So, get out those 2006 calendars and mark the 25th of February with a great big smiley face. We will be meeting early that day (very early) and heading up to Sugar Bowl Ski Resort for skiing, snowboarding, kid’s lessons or to just sit in the lodge and drink cocoa and read your favorite winter book. (That’s right; you don’t have to be a ski bunny to join the fun).

Details are being finalized right now and a sign-up sheet will be posted after the New Year, so keep an eye out. This is one school trip you don’t want to miss! –Your ski trip coordinators:  Kate Dey; Katie Fahrner; David Madden.

Winter Enrichment

Winter Enrichment registration is drawing to a close!  We are no longer accepting registration in our Early Childhood Dance and Gymnastics classes.  We still have a few spaces in Science, Elementary dance, chess, voice, Spanish, and Kid’s Kuisine.  I will accept registration forms on January 3rd and 4th to fill these last few spaces.  All forms are located in the Extended Day foyer.  Please return forms and payments to Karen Lane or Kim Carlock.  Happy holidays from the Extended Day staff and see you in 2006!
