Thanksgiving Message

In the past year we have been made more aware of the hardships endured by so many of our fellow residents of our fragile and turbulent planet reminding us more than ever how much we have to be grateful for our own good fortune.  Those of us who are members of this fine school community are truly blessed to enjoy a beautiful, safe, and secure oasis where children are happy nearly all the time and adults genuinely care and support for one another in the common purpose of educating the hearts, minds, and character of our students.  I feel grateful, even awestruck, every single day for my good fortune to be in such a special place and among such fine fellows of this small and wonderful school community.  Please have not just a happy Thanksgiving but a meaningful one as well.

--Jonathan Martin, Head of School

Congratulations Again Mrs. Carol Schofield

This morning’s Contra Costa Sun features a very large and loud headline: “Saklan Valley School Teacher Carol Schofield earns Honor.”  Click here to read this article.

Last night more than 300 dignitaries and leading citizens of Contra Costa County gathered at the Diablo Country Club to witness Mrs. Schofield be awarded her trophy and a $10,000 unrestricted check to salute her teaching excellence.   After accepting her honor, Mrs. Schofield herself gave the evening’s most impressive speech: witty, warm, and inspiring;  we are delighted to share it with you.

Saklan Valley Annual Book Fair

Saklan Valley's Annual Book Fair is right around the corner.  Please mark your calendars for Saturday December 3rd.  We will be at Barnes & Noble in Walnut Creek all day.  This year we will have children's art on display, elementary students will recite poetry from 3:00 to 4:00,  and we will be staffing the gift wrapping station at the front door.  We also need volunteers to help answer questions and wrap: the sign up form is on the front counter in the school office.  Saklan does receive a portion of our all purchases made by Saklan supporters and friends, so please be sure to tell family and friends.  Thanks so much, and happy reading!

Don’t Buy Cold Play Tickets

Saklan’s Annual Concert (K-8) is Tuesday January 31st

Another reminder: Our Annual K-8 concert will take place on Tuesday, January 31st this year—which is the same night Cold Play plays Oakland Arena.   Save the date!

Second Annual Play with the Pros

In two weeks we will host our Second Annual Play with the Pros Basketball Clinic for 4th and 5th grade boys and girls of our school and our community.  Calbert Cheaney, Warriors star and Saklan parent, will come to coach, give tips, and sign autographs for the kids in attendance; our own PE teacher and former professional Terrance O’Kelley will run drills with the kids; and this year we will be joined by a teammate and friend of Calbert Cheaney, Warriors Center Adonal Foyle.  This great event is happening here on our Sport Court Sunday, December 4 from 3-5:00 pm.  Registration is filling fast; it is available at www.saklan.org.

From the Annual Giving Campaign Committee

In a season of saying thanks, we want to take this opportunity to thank all the parents at our school for the myriad of ways in which they support Saklan’s mission and our children’s education; we also especially thank today those families who have already made their pledge to support the school’s Annual Giving Campaign.

To date, more than 45% of our school families have pledged to the campaign, for a total of $119,000, bringing us already to more than 70% of our $160,000 goal.   The fifty families who have given already have show great generosity in their giving, averaging more than two thousand dollars each.

We thank them with great appreciation and warmth:

We know that many others of you are intending to join in in this important effort—we ask that you make your pledges soon so we can conclude our campaign in a timely fashion and so we can include your name on our next listing. It is our goal to wrap up this campaign before winter break-- pledges need not be fulfilled until May 31st.

Thank You,

Your Annual Giving Committee,

Jennifer Griessel, Chair; Kate Dey, Betsy Hill, Paul Felton, John Macauley, Bett Tokar, & Diane Wilcox.

Extended Day News

We are asking all parents to check out our overflowing Lost and Found bin.  It is located in the corner of the Extended Day foyer.  We know how costly uniform clothes can be, so please stop by and look for any of your child’s missing clothing.  We will donate the extra clothes before winter vacation to a local Goodwill or thrift store.

Our Extended Day billing system is working very well. We send out bills around the first of every month.  If you do not receive a bill, there are two possible reasons: your bill may be less than $100, or you have prepaid.  We are still strongly encouraging everyone to purchase either a monthly plan or buy a block of drop-in hours.  This helps make planning for Extended Day much easier.

Enrichment News

Our second session of enrichment classes has gotten off to a great start.  This session of classes will end in Mid-December. We are continuing Gymnastics, Chessmasters, Basketball, and Kid’s Kuisine this session.  We are offering three new classes dance, voice, and Spanish.  Please feel free to pick up an enrichment schedule of classes that lists all the dates and times for session two.  They are located in the Extended Day foyer.

We have space available in our new Spanish class.  We have hired a fantastic new teacher named Kathleen Hogan.  She is eager to teach your children Spanish in a fun, engaging way.  Please see Kim Carlock in the Extended day office to register.
