Thank You Parents For a Great International Day!

A fabulous feast was consumed by our student body and faculty Thursday in celebrating our annual International Day.  First through Eighth Graders enjoyed a banquet of amazingly delicious, original, and wonderfully prepared meals that you Saklan parents did so much work to provide: Thank you very much! PreSchool-Kindergarten students also had a nice snack of Brazilian treats as well, thanks you parental support.  All morning, students toured the campus learning about Latin American cultures from native speakers.  It was a great event, and we really appreciate the hard work of our parents to make it possible—and we should single out for particular praise the hard working parental coordinator Annie Barendregt.

Kidpower Event

KIDPOWER: Erika Leonard - Click here to RSVP

Wednesday, November 16, 2005, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the church next door to Saklan Valley School.

A workshop for ADULTS ONLY, child care provided at school.

This entertaining, active two-hour program gives parents, teachers, and other caregivers the opportunity to learn the KIDPOWER approach for introducing and practicing self-protection skills with young people. For parents, the program answers the questions

- How can we teach our children to be safe without scaring them?

- How can I balance my children’s growing need for independence with the need to keep them safe?

Participants will learn methods to improve both the safety and the quality of their children’s interactions with strangers and with people they know. The workshop will emphasize the development of healthy personal safety and boundary setting skills in young people 3-12 years old.

This workshop will explore methods of teaching children to:
- Be and act aware
- Project an attitude of confidence
- Set appropriate boundaries with people they know
- Create safety zones with strangers when out on their own
- Act responsibly while respecting others
- Persist until they get help, especially with people in authority

Auction Thank You

(Save the Date:  March 18, 2006)

We know that the month of March may seem far away.  However, the Auction Committee is already preparing for our 2006 Annual Auction.  Thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers who joined us last weekend for the Volunteer Brunch and to all who have so generously pledged their time to help make the auction a success.  We truly appreciate your support & enthusiasm and look forward to working with you over the upcoming months.

Our focus over the past few months has been corporate donations.  In addition, some of you have already stepped forward to pledge family and/or group donations for which we are extremely grateful.  In the very near future, you will begin to see more news concerning preparation for the event, as well as more details concerning the plans for the evening. Please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Thanks so much!  Stephanie Brandt & Peggy Ostrom

Upcoming Winter Events, Concert and Family Fun Night Dates

Our annual Kindergarten to 8th Grade Concert, featuring music from both our Music and French enrichment programs, will occur Tuesday, January 31st, at the DelValle Theater in Walnut Creek.  (This is a date change from the original calendar; we had to move it up a week).    Save the Date—many more details forthcoming.

Just prior to that, Friday January 27th, the Parent Association will host its annual Family Fun Night with food, fun and magic at a Lafayette church hall.    Save that date too!  More detail to follow.

Middle School “Feast for a King”

Last night our middle school students outdid themselves again, acting as servers and wait staff and also performing poetry and skits on behalf of their parents in attendance at this special fundraiser for Pakistani earthquake relief. Nearly $1000 was raised to support the victims of that quake; a special appreciation goes to humanities teacher Ms. Kam for arranging this event.

Extended Day News

We are asking all parents to check out our overflowing Lost and Found bin.  It is located in the corner of the Extended Day foyer.  We know how costly uniform clothes can be, so please stop by and look for any of your child’s missing clothing.  We will donate the extra clothes before winter vacation to a local Goodwill or thrift store.

Our Extended Day billing system is working very well. We send out bills around the first of every month.  If you do not receive a bill, there are two possible reasons: your bill may be less than $100, or you have prepaid.  We are still strongly encouraging everyone to purchase either a monthly plan or buy a block of drop-in hours.  This helps make planning for Extended Day much easier.

Enrichment News

Our second session of enrichment classes has gotten off to a great start.  This session of classes will end in Mid-December. We are continuing Gymnastics, Chessmasters, Basketball, and Kid’s Kuisine this session.  We are offering three new classes dance, voice, and Spanish.  Please feel free to pick up an enrichment schedule of classes that lists all the dates and times for session two.  They are located in the Extended Day foyer.

We have space available in our new Spanish class.  We have hired a fantastic new teacher named Kathleen Hogan.  She is eager to teach your children Spanish in a fun, engaging way.  Please see Kim Carlock in the Extended day office to register.
