International Day is Thursday November 10!

Our annual International education Day, or I-Day as we call it, is fast approaching on Thursday, November 10.   This year we are partnering with the UC Berkeley Center on Inter American Studies, and thus our theme is Latin America.   Presenters will join us to offer workshops to our first through eighth grades; they hail from Mexico, Chile, Brazil, Colombia, and Peru.

Preschool – Kindergarten

Thursday, November 10th is International Day for our E.C.E. through Kindergarten.  This year we are focusing on Brazil. The preschool through Kindergarten classes will be broken into 4 groups that will include all children of the Preschool through Kindergarten classes. We hope to give our children a taste of Brazilian folklore, dance, art, and food with a very hands-on approach. These groups will spend 20 minutes in each of the four classrooms, and have a snack all together.

We would appreciate it if any of parents that have Brazilian artifacts, clothing, musical instruments, or books, could lend them to us for that morning.  We are also looking for Brazilian dishes that could be made for us to serve as a tasting for approximately 50 children. Tastes of something savory, sweet, breads and drinks specifically. If you are able to assist us with this endeavor, please speak with one of the core PS-K teachers.

Otherwise know that all we need from you to make this day successful, is your children.

First through Eighth Grade

First through Eighth Grade I-Day annually culminates in an International Feast, for which school parents have been extraordinarily generous and supportive in providing trays of themed food.  Room Parents will be following up to coordinate this, but the assignments of countries are below, with websites for recipes.

1st and 2nd: Chile

3rd: Mexico

4th: Brazil

5th: Colombia

Middle School: Peru

An Earthquake Relief Dinner for the Southeast Asia Victims

Dear Saklan Families,

You are cordially invited to “A Feast Fit for Kings”: An Earthquake Relief Dinner for the Southeast Asian Victims.  The dinner will be held on Thursday November 10th, 2005 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  This is the same evening as international day, and we hope it will be a welcome relief from cooking on this busy day.

The dinner is hosted by the seventh grade students as part of the History of Islam curriculum and each of the seventh grade students will be giving a brief presentation during the meal.  The funds raised during this event will be donated to Save the Children, please click here for more information. The project is integrally related to the 7th grade Islam curriculum as our students will be supporting one of the most meaningful acts of Islamic pillars; Zakat (the giving of alms/charity).

The meal will take place in the Math, French, and Library classrooms while the Humanities classroom will serve as the Buffet line.  In addition to presentations by our 7th grade students, 6th and 8th grade students will be volunteering their time serving as waiters, waitresses, and bussers to help the event go smoothly.  The food for the meal will be provided by donations from local restaurants.

We are inviting all adults from the Saklan community to the dinner and requesting a donation of $25 per person.  If you are interested in attending, or supporting this event please let us know by filling out the form below and returning it by Tuesday November 8th.

In gratitude,

Manija Kam & Chris LaBonte

We very warmly welcome all families to join us on an autumnal afternoon next month to visit our classrooms, say hello to our teachers, view student work, and learn more about Saklan’s PS-8 curriculum.  Classrooms will be open for two hours, 2:00-4:00, and there will be a special presentation by middle school teachers and students from 2:30 to 3:30.

This is also a very nice way to introduce the school to your friends and neighbors.  Feel free to bring them yourself, or if you would like, we would be delighted to mail them our own invitation to the event—just let us know their name and address, and it will be in the mail!

Extended Day News

The second session of enrichment classes has started this week.  We are offering so many fun and engaging activities after school.  If you would like to join us, we are still accepting registration forms and payments for all classes except the early childhood dance class.  Here is the weekly schedule of classes for the months of November and December:

Monday-California Gymnastics for ages 3-5

Tuesday - Happy Feet Dance Class for ages 3-11

Wednesday - Chess masters! for ages 3-14

Voice Class for ages 6-12

Thursday-Basketball for ages 6-11

Spanish for ages 3-12

Friday-Kid’s Kuisine for ages 3-14

All registration forms and a more comprehensive weekly schedule are available in the Extended Day foyer.  Classes are filling up fast, so please register today!

I would like to highlight 2 new enrichment classes.  The first is our Spanish class.  We have hired a dynamic, interesting teacher named Kathleen Hogan.  She currently teaches Spanish at Rheem Elementary School.  Her teaching approach is to teach vocabulary and basic conversational skills through games, songs, and art.  Our first Spanish class with Kathleen will be on Thursday, November 10th.   Space is still available.

We are so fortunate to have our very own Dana Anderson teaching a voice class at Saklan.  Her extensive training and impressive career in singing has made Dana a perfect teaching candidate for this class.  She is offering the first class to children in grades 1-3 and the second class to children in grades 4-6.  Please register soon because our first class is Wednesday!
