Katrina’s Wake

A moment of silence was held this morning at Flag for the victims of the devastating hurricane—it was remarkable to experience the genuine silence of more than 200 students, teachers and parents in a shared moment of concern, sympathy, and hope for those suffering such hardship right here at home in the United States.  Already students and teachers are making plans for fundraising activities to support those in need, and our school has also alerted our national association (NAIS) that we have spaces and would be honored to be able to assist displaced Gulf Coast families needing immediate opportunities to enroll their children in a quality school until their own schools (and homes) are re-built and re-established.  Look for more information forthcoming about some of these initiatives, and join me in extending our great sympathies and hopes for the families experiencing such an enormous tragedy.

Back to School Night

Come one, Come all to join us Wednesday for our once a year, very special, and very important Back to School Night.  Learn the routines of your child’s day, meet and enjoy the company of your children’s classmates’ parents, enlighten yourself on goals of our curriculum, and have your questions answered.   Perhaps no evening of the year is more important than this one.  The ever generous and helpful PA volunteers of the hospitality committee will provide snacks in the courtyard by middle school beginning at 6; our program will begin at 6:30 with a few all-school announcements around the flagpole in front of the school; by 7:00 you should be already in a classroom enjoying presentations by the core classroom teacher or one of your children’s many specialist instructors (French, PE, Art, Music, Computers, Science, Library).   The evening should end somewhere between 8:15 and 9, depending on your child’s grade.   Due to the extent of campus usage that night, we are unable to provide childcare, and children are not invited to this event.

Calendar Changes

The official school calendar has listed a two day period in September (22nd-23rd) for a noon dismissal and school closure for faculty professional development.  We hate to do this kind of calendar change, and we try to do it only very rarely, but the training which we are intending has encountered a scheduling conflict, necessitating us to reschedule to a date in late October.  So we will have school September 22nd and 23rd (and if you have already made travel plans, we will have to excuse you), and please now mark that school will close at noon on the 27th of October, and be closed the 28th as well; Extended Day will be open and will be happy to host your children those days.

School Pictures

We are very pleased to announce that popular local portrait photographer Sandra Eaton is taking our School photos this year.   School Pictures will be taken this coming Thursday, September 8th for 2nd through 8th grades (8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon) and Friday, September 9th for PS – 1st grades (8:30 – noon).

The first hour and one half of each day will be for group class photos.  All 1st through 8th grade students must be in School Uniforms.  The photo shoot volunteers will do their best to tidy and address hair related issues.

Approximately 7-10 days after the shoot your child will be bringing home their photo proofs for your selections.  If you have any questions please call or email Vicki Filter,

Seeking Office Assistant

Many of you have met Julia, our terrific Office Assistant of the past year, who is now off on her way to UC Davis.  We are now seeking to replace her; should you know of an extremely reliable and personable high school junior or senior who might like a steady, five day a week afternoon position at a decent rate of pay, please refer him or her to us.  Thank you.

Extended Day News – New Spanish Teacher!

The Extended Day program has gotten off to a great start!  We have officially converted to an automated time clock system to sign children in and out of Extended Day.  Our Saklan families have been so gracious and supportive of the new system.  Each parent and guardian should have their own unique 4 digit code to use.  If you have questions about the new process, please call or see Kim Parks-Carlock.

We are currently taking sign ups for our Fall Enrichment program.  We are offering gymnastics, science, chess, basketball, and a kid’s cuisine class.   Each of these flyers is available in the Extended Day Foyer.

Please welcome our new Spanish instructor, Senora Silvia Giebitz!  We are so pleased to have found such an interesting and talented teacher.  Silvia is well versed in a variety of cultural media related to Spanish heritage.  A longtime Spanish language teacher, she currently works as an art teacher, jewelry designer, painter, and has a degree in Latin American history.  She will not only be able to offer Spanish language instruction, but can tie in other aspects of culture such as music, art, dance, food, and history due to her rich background and vast amount of experience.  Saklan is very excited about working with her this year and discussion is happening around how to extend her teaching to further enlarge our Spanish language programs after-school.  Silvia will be seated with me at the Extended Day table anxious to answer questions about our new Spanish Language and Culture class and all of the details.  I will have flyers available Wednesday evening.  Please don’t miss your opportunity to meet our fantastic new specialist!
