Flash: Family Fun Night Two Weeks Away!

Flash: Annual K-8 Concert 2.5 weeks Away: The 31st! (Not the 7th)

Welcome to Ms. Eidbo

It is with great pleasure we present to you our new third grade teacher, Ms. Janet Eidbo.  She began this week and is off to a great start already.  Ms. Eidbo has four years experience teaching third grade at Tabernacle School in Concord, a private school.  Prior to that, she trained for two years as an intern in the third grade at Head Royce School, working closely with a highly regarded veteran Head Royce teacher.  Last school year she was a regular sub for us here at Saklan, always impressing us with her classroom managment and strong classroom personality. She was selected for the position after our review of nearly forty applications and interviews of three "finalist" candidates. Ms. Eidbo, a resident of Clayton, has a daughter in tenth grade in Walnut Creek.  About her decision to come to Saklan, she says: “I am delighted because I have been seeking a third grade position at a school of this caliber and reputation; I am also very excited to be able to work with a faculty and student body like the ones I have gotten to know this week!”

School Uniforms and Sweatshirts Grades 1-8

Please remember: sweatshirts and cold weather tops of all kinds must conform to Saklan uniform clothing on all but free dress days.  This means that students may only wear sweaters or sweatshirts that are red, white, or blue, and logo free (the Saklan logo is permissable).   Students may put jackets on to go outside, but when they come back in, jackets should be removed.  Because it is hard to tell a chilled child they need to remove a sweatshirt or sweater indoors, they may only wear uniform sweatshirts, inside or out.  We ask parents that they please collaborate with us and respect our (not terribly restrictive after all) school uniform policy in this way.

Logo free (the Saklan logo is permissable)

SUNS SWEATSHIRTS

In support of our sports teams and to raise money for this spring’s CARNIVAL the student council will be taking orders for SUNS sweatshirts.  These great looking sweatshirts are can be ordered in adult and child sizes for $27 and will be available the second or third week of February. The Student Council will be taking orders before and after school for the next two weeks. Please stop by and support our school.

Note: These sweatshirts ARE Mr. Martin approved as conforming to the school uniform!

K-8 Concert Ticket Reservations

Our annual concert is coming up on us fast, and it is time to take ticket reservations.   The growth of the school does require us to be more careful about ticket distribution so as to not overcrowd the 378 seat theater, 116 seats of which are taken by the student performers, and another 20 or so by our staff.

Grandparents Ticket Reservation

We have already received nearly thirty ticket reservations from grandparents; grandparents who have not RSVP’d already should do so by next Friday the 20th by calling the school office.

Family Ticket Reservation

There are 84 K-8 families, and we are reserving two tickets for each K-8 family.   If you will not need both of these tickets, please let us know by submitting that information below.   There is still a pool of some 50-60 tickets remaining, which we will award to families who would like 1-3 additional tickets for close family members only.

To request these 1-3 additional tickets for close family members other than grandparents, please include it in the form below and we will do our best to accommodate.   (And yes, we will explore venue alternatives for next year to try to identify theaters with more seating!)

My family does NOT need two tickets:

Concert Costuming

K-8 Families: Mark your calendars for the 31st.  All K-8 students will perform in songs from around the world.

Families will also need to prepare for their children to wear simple costumes to the event— we are asking boys and girls to wear white shirts: Clean and neat T-shirts for students in grades K-2, and button down Oxford style white shirts or blouses for grades 3-8. Boys should wear black pants; girls should wear black/dark long skirts, calf or ankle length  (if strongly preferred, girls may wear pants, but we are requesting skirts).  More information on costumes to follow.

Family Fun Night

Come One, Come All to our Annual Parent Association Family Fun Night.  This event is entirely open to all, and is especially intended for the pleasure of our families with younger children.  Pizza, salad, dessert, music dancing and a terrific Magic Show with a highly regarded Magician—all this for your family on what otherwise would be a dark and cold Friday night in January.  Join the families of your child’s classmates for this very fun event—priced at only $20 for the whole family!  This is not a fundraiser, but a FUNraiser, and we very much welcome everyone, especially newer families, to come on down for this fabulous night.   Let us know your coming by returning the form or clicking below.

AUCTION DONATION UPDATE

Click here to donate to the aution.

Thank you so much to everyone who has already donated to the auction, we are building an impressive catalog of items.  For those people still needing ideas, remember, that in addition to physical items, we also need services such as facials, massages, house cleaning, home repair, painting etc.  Think about your suppliers of these type of things. Maybe even neighbors and friends and what they might be able to offer.  Also, stores that you patronize on a regular basis might be willing to donate or give gift certificates.  This is a great opportunity for suppliers to reach out to their target audience, and, depending on the donation size, receive free advertising as well.  We’re trying to have all donations in by January 20th so we appreciate your quick action on this.

Parents and students, hopefully you all received your yearbook dedication forms and are working on your creative masterpiece.

If you need some ideas, be sure to stop by the bulletin board in the main breezeway to see examples from years past.  Please follow the directions carefully so your piece can be scanned and printed without touch-ups or cropping.  More dedication forms are available in the office. Research study seeking volunteers

The Northern California Cancer Center (NCCC) in Fremont, CA, is a non-profit organization dedicated to researching who gets cancer and why, how to detect and treat cancer, and how to improve the quality of life of those living with cancer.  The goal of its GRLS study is to help researchers better identify factors that may protect against the development of certain health conditions or diseases, such as breast cancer, later in life.

Currently, it is recruiting 350 girls aged 10-13 years to participate in this study, which examines how diet (specifically soy intake), exercise, and genetics influence growth and development during puberty.  Participants will be interviewed and complete surveys, and will be paid $75.  For more information, or to volunteer, visit them at http://www.grlsstudy.org/

Extended Day News

We have an important date approaching that will affect our Saklan families. Wednesday, January 25th is a noon dismissal for staff professional development.  Extended Day will be open from 12:00 until 6 p.m.   You can rest assured that our staff will have an afternoon planned that will be fun, creative, and engaging.   It is very important to us that the children have a good time while they are here.  If you are interested in keeping your child here, please sign up by the time clock located in the Extended Day foyer.  Please indicate approximately what time you will be picking your child up.  These days can be extremely full, so please make sure and take the time to reserve your space.

I have another important reminder for our families regarding pick up from Extended Day.  We are requesting that each parent or guardian picking up a child walk to the designated area and tell a staff member that you are taking this child.  By law, we are required to only allow children to go home with the adults placed on the Emergency Information sheet, unless otherwise stated via a note or phone call.  We need to know that our Saklan students are in the right hands, as well as knowing exactly where each child is.

Finally, the Extended Day staff has a request for any old board games or computer games that are in good condition.  We know that your children have probably received wonderful new toys and games recently due to our holiday season.  If you are doing any cleaning and would like to get rid of some games, we would be thrilled to take them off your hands for our Extended Day children.  We do plan on purchasing some new entertainment for our program; however, I thought I would put it out there since Christmas and Hanukah has just passed.  Thanks so much for your help!

Winter Enrichment

Winter Enrichment registration is drawing to a close!  We are no longer accepting registration in our Early Childhood Dance, Gymnastics classes, and Kid’s Kuisine classes.  We still have a few spaces in Science, Elementary dance, chess, voice, and Spanish.  I will accept registration forms in the next week to fill these last few spaces.  All forms are located in the Extended Day foyer.  Looking to the near future, on-line registration will be available, as well as the registration forms for your convenience.  Please return forms and payments to Karen Lane or Kim Carlock.  Happy new year from the Extended day staff!
