Parent Association Meeting Thursday

All school parents are invited to attend our January Parent Association meeting next Thursday, January 12, at 8:35 AM across the street at the church.  In addition to our regular business and important announcements from the Auction committee, we will be featuring two of very own teachers for presentations.  Mrs. Moebius, the school Librarian, will present for 15 minutes on the library’s new Athena catalogue computer system, and Mrs. Ellis will talk for 20 minutes about high school counseling and how at Saklan we work to match graduating 8th graders with the right high school for their needs.

GOOD HUMOR WEEK   Next Week, Jan. 9th-13th

In order to banish the winter doldrums the student council will continue with the tradition of sponsoring Good Humor Week.  From Monday the Jan. 9th to Friday Jan. 12th the students will –for the most part- continue with their normal classes but they will also get to dress up in creative costumes* and to participate in fun games during their breaks.  A schedule for each of the dress-up themes is listed below.  Please feel free to contact Mr. LaBonte if you have any questions.

 Monday: Sports Day

Students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite sports player.

Tuesday: Crazy Hair & Clash Day

Students are encouraged to dress up in ugly & crazy clothes and to do crazy things with their hair.

Wednesday Decade Day  Students are encouraged to dress up in an outfit from another decade.

Thursday: Job Day  Students are encouraged to dress up as a professional (e.g. carpenter, fireman…).

Friday: Pajama Day/ Read in  PJ – Read in.  Students can wear pajamas and will spend time in class reading a book of their choice.

* Please be sure that your child’s outfit is neither revealing nor offensive

The Student Council will be directing activities and “competitions” for all students on the black top during the lunch break period (12:22-12:45)

Annual Concert, K-8

K-8 Families: Mark your calendars for the 31st.  All K-8 students will perform in songs from around the world.

Families will also need to prepare for their children to wear simple costumes to the event— we are asking boys and girls to wear white shirts: Clean and neat T-shirts for students in grades K-2, and button down Oxford style white shirts or blouses for grades 3-8. Boys should wear black pants; girls should wear black/dark long skirts, calf or ankle length  (if strongly preferred, girls may wear pants, but we are requesting skirts).  More information on costumes to follow.

Hello & Happy New Year!

The month of March is just around the corner.  The Auction Committee is busy preparing an evening filled with family, friends, great food, and wonderful entertainment.

(Save the Date:  March 18, 2006)

This event is extremely important to our school.  We ask that each family make it a priority to participate by donating items,  attending, and bidding on items.

Here’s a quick update…

Parent Donations:

- Please fill out and return donation forms to Karen Lane in the office as soon as possible.  “Blank” donation forms are available in the front office.  Also, electronic forms are available through the Auction Portal (www.saklan.org/auction/).

- For those of you who would like suggestions, a “Shopping/Wish List” is available through the Auction Portal as well.  (Note:  This list is updated as items are received and is completely current.)

Catalog Advertising/Dedications:

- Advertising space is available in the auction catalog for purchase.  Forms are ready for  your use both in the front office and through the Auction Portal.

Baskets:

To assist us with packaging, we are looking for baskets, which you may have left over  from the holidays.  If you have any to offer/donate, please leave them with Karen Lane in  the front office.

Thanks so much for all of your support and enthusiasm.  We most definitely appreciate it!  More to follow!

Again, happy 2006!

The Auction Committee

YEARBOOK DEDICATIONS !!

- The Yearbook Committee is busy working on the Saklan Valley Yearbook for 2005/06. As in the past we are offering parents (grandparents, children, etc.) the opportunity to place special personalized notes in the yearbook for their child or children, teachers, friends, etc.

- You may either hand-write or type the dedications.  Special pictures (color photos work best) and/or drawings, as well as a special note are accepted, they just need to fit within the space purchased.  Be sure to look at the sample dedications from previous years on the breezeway bulletin-board for some cleaver ideas, then just follow the easy instructions.

Extended Day News

We have an important date approaching that will affect our Saklan families.   Wednesday, January 25th is a noon dismissal for staff professional development.  Extended Day will be open from 12:00 until 6 p.m.   You can rest assured that our staff will have an afternoon planned that will be fun, creative, and engaging.   It is very important to us that the children have a good time while they are here.  If you are interested in keeping your child here, please sign up by the time clock located in the Extended Day foyer.  Please indicate approximately what time you will be picking your child up.  These days can be extremely full, so please make sure and take the time to reserve your space.

I have another important reminder for our families regarding pick up from Extended Day.  We are requesting that each parent or guardian picking up a child walk to the designated area and tell a staff member that you are taking this child.  By law, we are required to only allow children to go home with the adults placed on the Emergency Information sheet, unless otherwise stated via a note or phone call.  We need to know that our Saklan students are in the right hands, as well as knowing exactly where each child is.

Finally, the Extended Day staff has a request for any old board games or computer games that are in good condition.  We know that your children have probably received wonderful new toys and games recently due to our holiday season.  If you are doing any cleaning and would like to get rid of some games, we would be thrilled to take them off your hands for our Extended Day children.  We do plan on purchasing some new entertainment for our program; however, I thought I would put it out there since Christmas and Hanukah has just passed.  Thanks so much for your help!

Winter Enrichment

Winter Enrichment registration is drawing to a close!  We are no longer accepting registration in our Early Childhood Dance, Gymnastics classes, and Kid’s Kuisine classes.  We still have a few spaces in Science, Elementary dance, chess, voice, and Spanish.  I will accept registration forms in the next week to fill these last few spaces.  All forms are located in the Extended Day foyer.  Looking to the near future, on-line registration will be available, as well as the registration forms for your convenience.  Please return forms and payments to Karen Lane or Kim Carlock.  Happy new year from the Extended day staff!
