Jonathan Martin has served as Saklan’s Head of School since 1999; prior to coming to Saklan that year he was successively a Teacher of History and English, the Dean of Students, and the Director at Maybeck High School in the years from 1988 to 1999. Mr. Martin holds degrees from Harvard University, (B.A., cum laude in General Studies, concentration in Government);

the Starr King School for the Ministry at Berkeley’s Graduate Theological Union (M.Div., the preparatory degree for ministry in the Unitarian Universalist tradition and denomination); and from the Education School of the University of San Francisco (M.A., Private School Administration).
As a graduate of Washington D.C. ’s Sidwell Friends School, and having been a student previous to that at the Massachusetts school Milton Academy, Mr. Martin brings to Saklan a lifelong immersion in and passion for the independent school tradition of excellence. Other past professional experiences include book reviewing for several Bay Area publications and re-election campaign managing for a Massachusetts Congressman.
Mr. Martin is an active and participating member in the Moraga Rotary Club and the East Bay Independent Schools Association, and serves as an Alumni interviewer of high school students for the Admissions department of Harvard University .
He is the husband of Carman Ryken. Together they have two sons, Spencer (b. 1998) and Nate (b. 2002), and live in Martinez .
