Uniform Guidelines

Uniforms are required for all students 1st through 8th grade. With the exception of designated free dress days, all students are required to be in uniform each school day. Please note that last year we have made an additional option for students to buy active wear for use during Physical Education classes. This should not be used as a regular uniform. All shirts and designated outerwear are REQUIRED to have the school logo embroidered on the front, left side. All clothing should be clean and in good repair. Please remember to label clothes with the student’s name.

Logo uniform apparel must be purchased from Lands’ End. To ensure a proper order, please provide The Saklan School preferred school number each time you place an order. When ordering online from Lands’ End, simply enter the school number and the list of approved items can be viewed. SHOES

Shoes should be comfortable, neat and clean, and must have toes and backs (rather than open toed or flip flop sandals). For safety reasons, shoes should have a leather or rubber sole. Every student should wear shoes suitable for use in PE on days they have PE, and everyday shoes should be suitable for playing on the playgrounds! Tennis shoes are permitted and recommended. Tennis shoes need to have a flat heel; high heeled tennis shoes are not permitted. All heels must be no higher than one inch. Dress shoes for regular school days are discouraged, as they are not suitable for active outdoor play.

OUTERWEAR

As appropriate on cool days, a uniform sweater/cardigan or plain gray, white or dark blue sweater, sweatshirt, cardigan or fleece should be worn. No sweatshirts with logos (other than the school logo) or words (other than the school logo) may be worn at school, inside or outside except on free dress days. Jackets or coats, which are worn outside the classroom on cold days, do not have to conform to uniform standards. Hats may be worn outside but never inside the classroom.

JEWELRY AND MAKEUP

Jewelry and hair accessories must be kept to a minimum. Dangling earrings and makeup are not allowed for elementary school students. Students in grades 6-8 may use “tasteful” makeup, but may not bring it to school or school events, may not apply it at school or school events, and may not share it at school or school events.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Spirit wear or uniform may be worn for Physical Education.

LOGO SWEATSHIRTS

At least one sweatshirt, cardigan or fleece, printed with the school logo, is REQUIRED for students in grades 1-8 and should be purchased through Lands’ End. Other sweatshirts, sweaters, cardigans or fleeces may be purchased at any store so long as they are gray, white or dark blue, and have no logos, words, or images on them.

FREE DRESS

The middle school students will have free dress days every Wednesday, and lower school students will enjoy free dress the last Wednesday of every month. On free dress day students may wear clothing other than their uniform, provided it is clean, free of holes, and doesn’t have any words or art work that is offensive, sexist, racist, profane, or that promotes drugs or alcohol. All tops must have shoulder straps which have a width of two fingers. Tops may not expose the midriff. All pants must be worn at the waist.

CONSEQUENCES

Students not conforming to the uniform policy will be held out of class in the office, and parents will be called to bring new clothes to school or asked to take children home to be changed. Logo or worded sweatshirts will be confiscated until the end of the school day and held in the office.
